Chan Buddhism spread from China south to Vietnam as Thiền and north to Korea as Seon, and, in the 13th century, east to Japan as Japanese Zen.
We also support American universities in organizing Chan workshops or establishing Chan societies through publications, sponsoring meditation teachers & facilitators, offering scholarship, providing information.
Many masters in the history of Chinese Chan Buddhism emphasized practice as daily living. Whether monastic or lay, a follower uses the concepts and methods of Chan in daily life.
By doing so, one experiences calmness and ease while being spontaneous and lively amidst mundane reality.
Chan is not a religion, not a philosophy, and surely not mysterious or weird sorcery. It is the wisdom of living, the cultivation of body and mind, and a principle and guideline for spiritual development. It is also the best method for influencing and purifying the environment.









Master Sheng Yen founded Dharma Drum Mountain and experienced in Chan using correct approaches, he guided practice in both the West and East.




Master Sheng Yen taught in the United States starting in 1975, and established Chan Meditation Center in Queens, New York, and its retreat center, Dharma Drum Retreat Center at Pine Bush, New York in 1997.
He also visited many countries in Europe, as well as continuing his teaching in several Asian countries, in particular Taiwan. Sheng Yen gave dharma transmission to several of his lay Western students, such as John Crook, who later formed the Western Chan Fellowship, and several other Western disciples such as Simon Child, Max Kalin, and Zarko Andricevic.
Sheng Yen authored more than 100 publications in Chinese, English, and Japanese, and received the Sun Yat-sen Art and Literary Award, the Sun Yat-sen Academic Award, and the Presidential Cultural Award, among other honorary awards.

Since 2012, She had learned photography from National Geographic photographers — Michael Yamashita and Frans Lating, and study globa environment & ecology issues.
